Recently, Tesla and other EV (Electric Vehicle) owners have been experiencing major problems with their vehicles due to harsh weather conditions. This, in turn, has caused a huge problem that should be addressed with these EVs.

Earlier this week, Chicago experienced its harshest "Blade of Ice'' 2024 had to offer so far. According to the NYTimes, the recent weather has reached up to -4 degrees Fahrenheit in the area. With this unusually brutal weather, it has drastically increased the time it takes to charge an EV. With the rising increase in EV owners as of recent times, this will become a bigger problem if not resolved. These dramatic weather conditions have greatly decreased the effectiveness of EV batteries as they now take a longer charging time and a lower possible range with each charge.

According to Albert Gore III, from the NYTimes, the decrease in the effectiveness of these vehicles could be the result of how these vehicles take more energy to heat their batteries. This, in turn, causes the normal consumption of energy to increase. To combat these problems, Tesla has posted guides for their users. Many of these guides state how users should keep their charge over 20% to help reduce the impact of the cold temperatures. Tesla also recommends its “Schedule Departure” feature and preheating the vehicle before usage.
